OH BUOY!

OH BUOY!
Don't try this with a Kindle.
Summer reads will take on a whole new meaning next year when waterproof paperbacks hit the beaches and pools. The Telegraph reported that a "clear wax sealant will prevent running ink and stop pages from becoming soggy and tearing when wet. The tough polymer coating is tear-resistant and promises to increase a title's shelf-life by up to 200%." Alan Cork's The Greater Bad will be the first book to receive the coating, and should be available next May.

This is great news for those of us who still love bound books and turning real pages. Oh buoy, indeed!

How Kids Really Are

'Do You Have Any Stories About How Kids Really Are?'

"Once a month a lumbering green van pulled up in front of our tiny school. Written on the side in large gold letters was State of Maine Bookmobile. The driver-librarian was a hefty lady who liked kids almost as much as she liked books, and she was always willing to make a suggestion. One day, after I'd spent 20 minutes pulling books from the shelves in the section marked Young Readers and then replacing them again, she asked me what sort of book I was looking for.

"I thought about it, then asked a question--perhaps by accident, perhaps as a result of divine intervention--that unlocked the rest of my life. 'Do you have any stories about how kids really are?' She thought about it, then went to the section of the Bookmobile marked Adult Fiction, and pulled out a slim hardcover volume. 'Try this, Stevie,' she said. 'And if anyone asks, tell them you found it yourself. Otherwise, I might get into trouble.' "

--Stephen King, reflecting upon his discovery of William Golding's Lord of the Flies in the Telegraph's edited version of King's introduction to an upcoming centenary edition of the novel.

Outlines of Life

Never the Twain Shall Meet

On the heels of the US Open, I feel now is the perfect time to let you know that I’m a little tired of that trite quote by Mark Twain:

“Golf is a good walk spoiled.”

Why I love Westerns

I grew up in the era of gritty black and white TV, when good scripts trumped special effects.  There were only 3 network channels and our imaginations ran wild.

For the Love of McGee

I love it when I encounter real treasures in trash culture. A country station playing Conway Twitty's wrenchingly wistful "Crazy in Love". A motel restaurant in Crescent City, decked-out in plastic and gilt decor, serving the tastiest prime rib in memory. Tuning in to ‘The Simpsons’ and finding the best social satire on the tube coming out of those cartoon mouths.

Authors on the Road

Check out this new video promoting Booking Authors Ink:

"I LOVED working with Lynda Bouchard during my book tours to North and South Carolina.  She made hectic days of visiting book sellers and entertaining my readers so much more enjoyable.  I sincerely appreciated her attitude, her professional and direct approach to everything we did, her knowledge, her sense of humor, and her patience.  I hope to work with Booking Authors Ink and her great team again soon."
